Turning Your Business Into An Eco-Friendly Powerhouse

It’s no secret that we have to change the way we live, if we’re going to prevent the worst of the effects of climate change from coming to pass. And, of course, it’s up to all of us to make those changes. However, the responsibility for making these changes is not divided equally. While we all need to make changes, some have to make more than others. The top 1% of wealthy people, for instance, are responsible for a significant portion of carbon emissions . Businesses are, too.

If you’re a business owner, then it’s worthwhile looking into turning your business into an eco-friendly powerhouse now. It’s likely that there’ll be a legislature that dictates the permitted emissions that companies are allowed in the not too distant future anyway. Plus, it’s the right thing to do!

But how can you make this transition? Let’s take a look.

Getting to Work Schemes

It’s not just what you do at your worksite that counts. The act of your employees getting to work also plays a big role when it comes to a company’s carbon emissions. It doesn’t make all that much sense to have everyone driving by themselves, in their own car. You could try to reduce this by initiating a cycle to work scheme at your business or suggesting that people get public transport or ride to work together. Of course, don’t just suggest that people do this. Give them an incentive! Could you provide a stipend for your team to buy a bike, for instance?

Energy Audit

Another way to improve your company’s eco-credentials is to figure out how much energy you’re using. This is something that, actually, not a lot of businesses know. They might see how much their energy bills are costing them, but they don’t know what the energy usage figure actually means. If you don’t know what to look for, you can hire an external auditor to do the job for you.

If you find that you need to make some improvements, then look at doing so. In this day and age, there are always ways to reduce your energy consumption. For instance, you could look at warehouse LED lighting for your storage facility; that type of lighting uses significantly fewer amounts of energy than other types. You may also look at ways to improve your worksite’s heating situation. Some insulation and smart hearing can go a long way, after all.

Check Your Suppliers

You shouldn’t just look at your own eco-credentials when you’re trying to make improvements to your business. You should also look at how planet-friendly your suppliers are, too. If you’re working hard to ensure that your business is good for the planet, then you won’t want to undo that good work by working with suppliers that have a worse environmental record. You should hold your suppliers to the same standards that you hold yourself. If we have high standards of each other, then the future of the world will look in good shape.
