Mark Zuckerberg posted on Elon Musk's X this summer for the first time in more than three years, and he used it to make one of Meta's biggest announcements of the year. On September 8, 2026, the tech journalist Alex Heath, who covers Meta for The Verge and his Sources newsletter, [said he had asked Zuckerberg why he is posting on X again](https://x.com/alexeheath/status/2097460319794889088) and posted a video of the exchange. Zuckerberg's own answer is not public, and the video is not reported here. The choice is on the record either way: Zuckerberg runs Threads, a direct rival to X, and still chose X to break his news.

Zuckerberg used the account to [launch Muse Spark 1.1, a new Meta AI model, and the Meta Model API](https://www.analyticsinsight.net/news/zuckerberg-breaks-3-year-silence-on-x-to-launch-metas-new-ai-model), which the company describes as its first proprietary API in the United States. Meta says Muse Spark 1.1 is built for coding and software development, carries a context window of up to 1 million tokens, and can run multiple AI agents at once across desktop, mobile, and browser. The model can write code, find and fix bugs, automate tasks, and process text, images, and video, according to the company. Developers receive free starter credits and then pay $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. Meta plans to fold the model into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and its smart glasses. META shares were down more than 1% on the morning of the announcement.

Meta launched Threads in 2023 as a rival to X, then still called Twitter. Speaking on Heath's Sources podcast, Zuckerberg has said Threads reached about 500 million monthly active users as of June 2026, a level he framed as matching or surpassing X. By his own account, he owns a platform that has drawn even with the one where he chose to post.
