As of Monday, an adult in Utah with acne can get a first prescription from an AI system through the Nolla Derm app, without an office visit. Nolla Health, the New York company behind the app, says it is the first organization in the country with regulatory approval for AI to issue initial prescriptions, after months of work with Utah's Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy.

Utah's first AI prescribing pilot, run by Doctronic since January, only renews prescriptions a licensed provider has already written, and the state's medical licensing board asked for it to be halted in April. Nolla says it met and worked directly with the board before launch so that the final program reflects the board's feedback.

Nolla says that for the first 100 patients, a licensed physician reviews and approves every AI-generated prescription before it is sent. Through the first 500 patients, the AI issues prescriptions on its own and a physician reviews them each day after the fact. After that, a physician reviews a sample of prescriptions once a week.
