On Tuesday 3rd November, Americans elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 senators, along with 36 state governors. Donald Trump is not on the ballot, but the vote settles whether his Republican Party keeps control of Congress for the last two years of his term. Republicans hold the Senate by 53 seats to 47 and the House by a handful of seats, so Democrats need a net gain of three seats to take the House and four to take the Senate.

If you live in Europe, the result arrives overnight. Polls close between 6pm and 1am Eastern Time, which is 11pm to 6am in London and midnight to 7am in Paris, Berlin and Madrid, so you will wake on Wednesday 4th November to most of the House result and possibly an unsettled Senate. An Associated Press analysis found a sharp rise in early voting in many of the states that will decide control of the Senate.
