Evos, a New York startup whose AI operators learn a job from a company's most experienced employees and then do the work themselves, has come out of stealth with $9 million in pre-seed funding. Uncork Capital and Field Ventures co-led the round, and Crosslink Capital, Utopia Capital Management, Sandwith Ventures and angel investors also took part.

The company sells to small and mid-sized businesses in freight, logistics and manufacturing. Its operators answer broker calls, build freight loads, chase missing paperwork and reconcile invoices, working inside the systems each business already uses. Evos passed $1 million in annual recurring revenue four weeks after going live, and will spend the new money on hiring and on bringing its operators to more of these companies.

## Tribal Knowledge in Small Freight and Manufacturing Businesses

Tribal knowledge is the know-how that experienced staff carry with them and that was never written into a manual or a system, such as how to price an unusual order or which charges on a carrier's bill to query. In a small firm, much of it is held by one or two people who have been there for decades.

> "The most capable system in many of these businesses is the person who has been there 20 years, and what they know has never been written down."
> — Urav Shah, founder and CEO of Evos

Small and mid-sized businesses make up most of the physical economy. According to the American Trucking Associations, 99.3% of US motor carriers run fewer than 100 trucks, and Census Bureau data shows that 93% of US manufacturers have fewer than 100 employees. Each runs its own way, and when its longest-serving people retire, what they know is usually lost. Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute estimate that US manufacturers could need 3.8 million new workers between 2024 and 2033, and that [1.9 million of those jobs could go unfilled](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/boeing-s-strike-response-exposes-critical-workforce-gaps-in-u-s-defense-manufacturing).

"For decades, software sold to industrial businesses has helped people organize and track work, but it has stopped short of doing the work," said Richard Kerby, partner at Field Ventures, a New York early-stage firm he co-founded in 2025. "Evos changes that. Its autonomous operators learn the judgment behind how a business runs, work within existing systems, and take ownership of entire operational functions."

## How Evos Operators Learn From a Company's Best People

Evos operators learn from what people do rather than from documents, studying the decisions a team makes and the patterns behind them. The company calls its setup the Trifecta: one hour with a company's experts, a working operator the next day and measurable results within a month. The platform is self-serve, and Evos says work that would take a consultant or implementation partner 9 to 18 months to deliver takes one of its operators 24 hours from discovery to deployment. Each operator is then given a whole function to run, such as invoice auditing, and the team reviews its results instead of prompting it one question at a time.

Every operator starts behind an approval gate. Staff approve, reject or change each decision it makes, and those decisions become its training data. As it proves accurate, it is given more autonomy, one task and one scenario at a time, and anything it has not seen before goes back to a person. An operator takes over a function fully only once its decisions consistently match its team's, and the business decides how far to go, from a person signing off every step to the operator running entirely on its own. Evos says its operators reach roughly 82% decision accuracy and handle about 70% of their work without a person stepping in.

"An Evos operator learns the job from these people, improves on it, and proves it can match them before it takes on any work by itself," Shah said. "Our goal is to put that expertise on every job, every day, so these businesses can run like the best in the world do."

## Freight Invoice Audits at MyFreightWorld

Freight audit means checking each carrier's bill against the agreed rate and what was actually shipped before it is paid. In less-than-truckload (LTL) freight, where several shippers' goods share one truck, bills often carry extra charges for reweighing, reclassification or liftgate service, and each one has to be checked.

MyFreightWorld, a freight brokerage and logistics company in Overland Park, Kansas, uses an Evos operator to audit every LTL carrier invoice against its transportation management system. In its first two months the operator made nearly 3,500 audit decisions at 97% accuracy, and in the last five weeks it closed out more than $600,000 of invoice value.

"Evos has helped us revolutionize our billing process with zero upfront investment, and also at an impressively fast speed measured in days and weeks," said Mike Chalfant, president of MyFreightWorld. "It's increased our accuracy and dramatically increased efficiency, which has ultimately led to a better experience for our customer base."

## Evos's $9M Pre-Seed Round and Workhorse Platform

Uncork Capital, a seed investor whose portfolio includes Tailscale, Gamma, LaunchDarkly and GPTZero, co-led the round with Field Ventures. Crosslink Capital, a San Francisco venture firm founded in 1989, also invested, along with Utopia Capital Management, Sandwith Ventures and angel investors.

"What stood out to me immediately is how quickly teams are putting Evos's autonomous operators to work on core parts of their business without a long technology roll out," said Tripp Jones, general partner at Uncork Capital. "That puts powerful technology within reach of businesses that software has long overlooked."

Shah, who studied at King's College London, founded Evos in 2026. He won the technology category of the Early Stage Entrepreneur of the Year awards in December 2025 for his previous company, Exa Labs Global. In the coming weeks Evos will formally launch its platform under the name Workhorse, which it describes as the workforce for physical industries. Alongside logistics and manufacturing, the company lists retail, industrials and energy among the sectors it serves.

## FAQ

**Q: What does tribal knowledge mean in business?**
It is the know-how that experienced staff carry with them but that was never written down in a manual, a process document or a system, such as how to handle an unusual order or which charges on a bill to query. In small freight and manufacturing businesses it is often held by a few long-serving people, so it is lost when they retire unless it is captured first.

**Q: What is the difference between institutional knowledge and tribal knowledge?**
Institutional knowledge usually means everything an organization knows, including what is recorded in its manuals, systems and files. Tribal knowledge is the unwritten part, held by particular people and passed on informally, if at all.

**Q: How do you capture tribal knowledge?**
Companies have usually relied on documentation, mentoring, shadowing and exit interviews before people leave. Evos's operators learn from the decisions experienced staff make, start behind an approval gate where people check each decision, and take on more of the work only as their decisions match the team's.

**Q: Who invested in Evos?**
Uncork Capital and Field Ventures co-led the $9 million pre-seed round, with Crosslink Capital, Utopia Capital Management, Sandwith Ventures and angel investors also taking part.
