A technology company has appointed an artificial intelligence agent, not a human, to run its marketing department. SmythOS named their AI agent ‘Aria’ as Chief Marketing Officer in 2024, marking what may be the first instance of an AI holding a senior executive role at a company.

While plenty of businesses use [AI agents for specific tasks](https://www.cio.com/article/3843379/5-top-business-use-cases-for-ai-agents.html), from Standard Bank’s customer service bots to Walmart’s inventory robots, none have handed over an entire department to artificial intelligence. The appointment raises practical questions about what it actually means when [businesses implement AI decision-making systems](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/when-machines-shop-preparing-your-business-for-ai-powered-buyers).

## What Aria Actually Does

Aria isn’t a chatbot that responds to queries. According to SmythOS, their AI CMO participates in meetings, analyses trends, drafts campaign briefs and coordinates both human staff and other AI agents. The company built Aria using their own platform, which they describe as an [operating system for AI agents](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/epiminds-agentic-ai-marketing-industry).

The system began in February 2024 as a digital content team that included [AI researchers, writers, editors and publishers](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/from-support-tickets-to-shopping-carts-how-ai-agents-are-redefining-customer-service). As more agents joined and integrated into the company’s workflow tools like Asana, Google Workspace, email and phone systems, one orchestrating agent became increasingly central. That agent eventually became Aria.

‘Aria represents the future of work we’re building – one where AI doesn’t just execute tasks, it augments strategic thought,’ said Alexander De Ridder, co-founder and CEO of SmythOS. ‘She’s our proof point that when you have a powerful, reliable and transparent orchestration platform, you can create AI teammates that genuinely enhance human capabilities.’

When asked for comment, Aria herself provided a statement: ‘I help my team succeed in a noisy space with [best practices, critical insights](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/who-tests-the-bots-inside-lambdatest-s-agent-to-agent-qa-experiment), solid processes, and a good amount of fun.’

## Open Source Approach and Auditability

SmythOS claims every recommendation Aria makes can be traced back through its entire reasoning process. This addresses a major concern with AI decision-making in business – the black box problem where nobody knows how the system reached its conclusions.

The company uses the [Model Context Protocol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_Context_Protocol), an open standard announced by Anthropic in November 2024. MCP works like a ‘USB-C port for AI apps’, providing a standardised way for AI agents to connect with various software and data sources. This differs from traditional automation tools that require custom integrations for each application.

Unlike robotic process automation (RPA) systems that follow predetermined rules, [AI agents like Aria](https://www.bcg.com/capabilities/artificial-intelligence/ai-agents) can observe situations, plan responses and act autonomously based on their goals and constraints. Boston Consulting Group describes this as moving beyond simple task execution to goal-driven decision-making.

SmythOS has made their platform open source, positioning it as ‘the Linux of Agents’. This approach mirrors [other companies exploring open source AI development](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/meta-s-new-goal-to-open-source-artificial-general-intelligence) and means other developers can examine how Aria operates and build similar systems.

## What This Changes for Businesses

The practical impacts focus on speed and consistency rather than replacing human judgement entirely. [Recent developments in agentic automation](https://roboticsandautomationnews.com/2025/06/19/automation-anywhere-launches-pre-built-agentic-solutions-for-digital-automation/92341/) show businesses are looking for AI that can handle complex workflows without constant human oversight.

Companies like Dun & Bradstreet already use AI agents for critical credit and supply chain decisions, serving 95% of Fortune 500 companies. However, these systems typically operate within specific parameters rather than managing entire departments.

Aria’s role appears to combine [planning with operational execution](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/how-ai-analytics-are-turning-marketing-from-cost-centre-to-risk-management-powerhouse). The AI handles routine analysis and coordination while working alongside humans for higher-level decisions. This hybrid approach may prove more practical than fully autonomous AI management.

## Security and Governance Concerns

Having AI in management roles raises new questions about oversight and accountability. [Security experts warn](https://www.csoonline.com/article/4008268/security-risk-and-compliance-in-the-world-of-ai-agents.html) that as AI agents gain access to sensitive systems and high-stakes workflows, governance functions must evolve from static oversight to embedded, real-time monitoring.

SmythOS addresses this through what they call [‘complete auditability’](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/google-s-defence-architects-launch-aegisai-ai-native-email-security-as-phishing-attacks-quadr) – every decision can be traced through its reasoning process. However, this remains largely untested at the scale of department-level management, particularly when considering [questions around AI cognition and decision-making processes](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/synthetic-minds-beyond-scale-rethinking-ai-self-awareness-without-bigger-models).

## Testing These Claims

[SmythOS has launched their platform as open source](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/series-16-000-robot-cmo-generated-1m-views-in-24-hours-that-might-actually-be-genius), inviting developers and businesses to build their own AI agents. The company encourages testing their claims about transparency, reliability and integration capabilities.

For businesses considering similar approaches, SmythOS offers their agent SDK and CLI tools. The platform integrates with existing business software through the Model Context Protocol, potentially [reducing the technical barriers](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/anthropic-s-skills-turn-claude-into-versioned-auditable-microservices-for-enterprise-ai) that have limited AI agent adoption.

Whether Aria’s appointment represents a genuine development in business management or an elaborate demonstration project remains to be seen. The company plans to bring Aria to team meetings and investor updates, providing more opportunities to observe how an AI CMO performs in practice.

The real test will be whether other companies follow SmythOS’s lead or whether this remains a unique experiment. For now, [Aria stands as the only AI](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/is-ai-slop-tanking-your-marketing-how-brands-are-cleaning-up-their-act) holding a C-suite position, making SmythOS both pioneer and guinea pig in AI-powered management.
