TaxAct has built a connector that lets users of Anthropic's Claude retrieve tax guidance, filing deadlines, and refund estimates without leaving the AI assistant's interface, a move that illustrates how compliance-sensitive software companies are approaching artificial intelligence in 2026.

The product, called the Claude Connector for TaxAct, is powered by Model Context Protocol, Anthropic's standard for connecting AI assistants with external tools and structured data sources. Rather than training a bespoke model on tax law, TaxAct has exposed its existing knowledge base through MCP, allowing Claude to query it on behalf of users. The logic is straightforward: the knowledge base already exists, carries current IRS guidance, and has been vetted for accuracy. The foundation model supplies the conversational layer.

TaxAct, a Taxwell company owned by private equity firm Cinven, has filed more than 111 million returns since its founding in 1998. Its decision to connect to Claude rather than develop proprietary AI reflects a calculation that other regulated financial software providers are making: the cost and liability of training models on tax, legal, or financial content is high, while the cost of connecting to an established model via a standard protocol is low.
