Stripe is adding four currencies beyond the US dollar to its stablecoin-backed cards: the euro, the Brazilian real, the Mexican peso and the Colombian peso. Under the plan, a cardholder with a euro balance will pay in euros, and the money will not pass through dollars first. Businesses that operate in several markets will be able to issue cards in the currencies their customers spend, which Stripe says will cut unnecessary foreign-exchange costs. Stripe announced the plan on October 15 with Plasma, a stablecoin-payments company, as its design partner.

"Stablecoins make it possible to hold and move money globally. We're working with Plasma to bring that same flexibility to spending, giving businesses the infrastructure to offer cards across currencies and markets without having to build it themselves," said Henri Stern, head of Stripe Crypto. Stern co-founded Privy, the wallet infrastructure firm Stripe acquired in 2025, and is its CEO.

Stripe already lets businesses in Europe [accept stablecoin payments](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/stripe-stablecoin-payments-europe-usdc-dune); the cards are for the other side of a transaction, paying from a stablecoin balance at a till or online.

## Stripe's Stablecoin Cards Are Still in Private Preview

Stripe's [stablecoin-backed cards](https://docs.stripe.com/issuing/stablecoin-cards) are in private preview, and businesses get access through Stripe's sales team. Stripe runs the program with Bridge, the stablecoin company it bought, in two versions: cards funded from stablecoin balances held in Stripe's own financial accounts, and cards that spend at the moment of purchase from a Bridge, Privy or other crypto wallet. Stripe's documentation lists the first version as a business prepaid debit card on the Visa network, issued through Lead Bank, that spends in US dollars from a USDC balance. Platforms using it must be based in the United States or Europe, and during the preview the accounts that hold the cards can be in more than 30 countries across Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean.

The euro, real and peso cards are still in development, and the companies have not named the markets they will cover or a launch date. The new cards will run on OUSD and other stablecoins that meet the requirements of the GENIUS Act, the US federal law that sets rules for payment stablecoins. Stripe and Plasma call the new currencies a first step toward letting a cardholder spend from several balances, with the right currency chosen automatically at the point of purchase. Stripe says its stablecoin cards are available in more than 30 countries today, and it plans to reach more than 100 countries in 2027.

## Plasma Will Help Design the Cards for People Who Spend Across Borders

Plasma runs a blockchain designed for stablecoin payments. Through its Plasma One app, which launched publicly in June 2026, it offers a global dollar account and three tiers of Visa-linked cards. As design partner, Plasma will help Stripe develop the multi-currency card around customers who hold and spend money in more than one country.

"We're building Plasma for people whose lives and finances span countries. Partnering with Stripe gives us the opportunity to develop multi-currency cards around how those people actually live and spend, with a simple ambition: spend like a local, anywhere," said Paul Faecks, Plasma's CEO.

## FAQ

**Q: What is a stablecoin card?**
It is a debit or prepaid card that spends from a stablecoin balance, a digital token designed to hold a steady value against a currency such as the dollar. Stripe's cards can be added to Apple Pay and Google Pay and come as physical or virtual cards.

**Q: How do stablecoin debit cards work?**
The card draws on a stablecoin balance when the cardholder pays. In Stripe's financial-accounts version, a platform converts dollars to USDC to fund its connected accounts in advance. In the Bridge version, Bridge, Stripe's stablecoin company, pulls the funds onchain from the linked wallet at the moment the card is used.

**Q: Can an individual get a Stripe stablecoin card?**
Not from Stripe directly. Businesses issue the cards to their own customers or connected accounts after signing up through Stripe's sales team. On the financial-accounts version a fixed 10,000 USD limit applies to each authorization, cards ship from the US by express or priority delivery, and custom card designs take about eight weeks. Stripe says a program on the Bridge version typically takes six to eight weeks to launch to customers.
