Google, OpenAI and Anthropic have moved closer to standing up an independent body to set standards for frontier AI, and the project now has a name and a short list of people who might run it. The three companies tentatively call it the Standards Authority for Frontier AI, or SAFA, according to The Information's Steph Palazzolo, who reported the name on September 24. The same reporting says the labs are floating Sriram Krishnan or Arati Prabhakar for chief executive, and Condoleezza Rice or David Friedberg for chair. The name is described as tentative, and the leadership slate as under discussion rather than settled.

The three labs approached Krishnan to lead the proposed self-regulator, according to AI Weekly, citing The Information. Krishnan served in the Trump administration as a White House AI adviser from January 2025 until June 2026, and left after publicly rejecting a licensing regime for AI. "There will not be an FDA for AI," he said at the time. The labs now want the person who argued against a federal AI regulator to run the private one they are building in its place.
