The first phase of the Ummbila Emoyeni wind farm began commercial operation on 2 August, and almost none of its output is destined for South African homes. Seriti Green, the developer, has contracted the power to the coal mines owned by its own parent company, delivered across Eskom's network under a wheeling agreement. The wind farm sits in Mpumalanga, the province at the centre of South Africa's electricity generation, almost all of it from coal, and it is the first wind project the province has ever had.

Seriti Holdings describes itself as an integrated energy business working across coal and renewable infrastructure. It supplies more than 30% of the coal that Eskom burns, employs 14,435 people and is majority black-owned and controlled. Seriti Green is its renewables arm, and Ummbila Emoyeni is the first large piece of a multi-gigawatt pipeline.
