At Gillette Stadium, home to the New England Patriots and one of the busiest event venues in the Northeast, most post-event waste has historically been sorted by hand. A partnership announced with Somerville, Massachusetts-based startup rStream is changing that.

rStream's AI-powered sorting system processed the full waste stream from seven consecutive sold-out events at the stadium, separating 479,000 individual recyclable objects with approximately 99% accuracy. The company says sorting is completed within 24 hours of each event, and the system logs a detailed digital record of every item processed, giving Gillette's operations team data to refine its waste diversion over time.

The deployment is a meaningful test for a young company. rStream was founded in 2021 by two UMass Amherst engineering graduates, Ian Goodine and Ethan Walko, who built their initial system on research conducted at the university. A campus pilot preceded the move to stadium-scale operations. Gillette Stadium, which hosts NFL games, concerts, and major events with attendances in the tens of thousands, represents a considerably harder environment.
