PureField Ingredients held a ribbon-cutting on 29 July at its plant in Russell, Kansas, for a carbon capture and sequestration facility the company says will handle up to 150,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year. The gas is captured off the plant's ethanol fermentation, compressed, and piped six miles to an injection well, where it goes into a deep geologic formation. The company puts the injection depth at more than 3,500 feet and says it has invested over $60 million in Russell County.

What makes the project work is not the pipeline or the well but the gas itself, which leaves an ethanol fermentation tank in a state that almost no other industrial source can match.
