An [executive order signed on June 22](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/06/securing-the-nation-against-advanced-cryptographic-attacks/) has turned the retirement of today's encryption from a research topic into a dated compliance program. Federal agencies must move every high value asset and high impact system to post-quantum cryptography for key establishment by December 31, 2030, and for digital signatures by December 31, 2031.

The near-term work is less dramatic. Within 30 days of the order, every agency head had to name a post-quantum migration lead, an official who reports to the agency's chief information officer and owns agency-wide cryptographic inventory management. Within 90 days, the Office of Management and Budget must issue guidance requiring each agency to review its inventory of those same high value and high impact systems and submit a plan for moving them. National security systems are carved out of that review and tracked separately: the director of the NSA has to report to the President on their migration status within 180 days and every year after that until the work is finished.

The reasoning sits in the order's opening section, which describes the risk of adversaries collecting United States information now and decrypting it later, once large-scale quantum computers are operational. Encrypted traffic captured today keeps its value to whoever took it if the key can be opened in a decade.
