American water utilities are under orders to get PFAS out of their drinking water. Removing the chemicals and destroying them are two different jobs, and only the first one is regulated.

The EPA says PFAS dissolve in water and that conventional drinking water treatment cannot take them out at all. The three technologies that do work, [activated carbon adsorption, ion exchange resins and high-pressure membranes](https://www.epa.gov/sciencematters/reducing-pfas-drinking-water-treatment-technologies), all operate by moving the chemicals somewhere else, onto a filter medium or into a concentrated liquid stream. The molecules come through the process intact. A utility that meets its limit has not destroyed anything. It has produced a smaller, dirtier volume of the same problem.

Claros Technologies, founded in 2018 and based in Minneapolis, has raised $55 million in a Series B financing to sell what happens next. The round was led by Treehouse Family Capital, with participation from Daikin America, Veralto, the Bush Foundation, Nord Asset Management and the Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundation, and it includes a convertible note the company had announced earlier.
