Nearly 6,500 cyclists set out across Massachusetts on Saturday and Sunday in the Pan-Mass Challenge, riding for a record $79 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Whatever they raise, Dana-Farber gets all of it. The cost of putting on the ride comes out of a separate pot: the PMC's corporate sponsors provide financial support along with goods and services, and that is what lets the organization pass on 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar. This weekend is the 20th consecutive year it has done so.

The arrangement has turned a two-day bike ride into the largest single athletic fundraiser in the world. Since Billy Starr organized the first one in 1980, the PMC has raised $1.125 billion for Dana-Farber. It is the institute's single largest contributor and generates 67 percent of the annual revenue of the Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber's community-driven fundraising arm. The PMC describes its own model as attaining maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift.

## Last Year's Total Was a Record $78 Million

In 2025, riders, donors, sponsors and volunteers raised and contributed [a record $78 million](https://www.dana-farber.org/newsroom/news-releases/2025/pan-mass-challenge-raises-record-78-million-for-dana-farber-cancer-institute), a gift announced on November 2 at a brunch at Rochambeau in Boston. More than 270,000 supporters contribute to the PMC's gift each year, and the riders and volunteers come from 43 states and 12 countries. The PMC says this year's ride arrives at a critical time, with federal research support shrinking and grant approval rates reaching historic lows.

## Dana-Farber Has More Than Doubled in Size Since 2000

The institute has grown from about 1.22 million square feet in 2000 to more than 2.83 million square feet in 2024, and PMC money helped grow its clinical trials program into one of the nation's largest. Dana-Farber says it played [a substantial role in advancing more than half](https://danafarberimpact.org/2024/12/pan-mass-challenge-surpasses-1-billion-milestone/) of all cancer therapies approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the last five years.

Benjamin Ebert, Dana-Farber's president and chief executive, has ridden the PMC for six years. “The PMC is an experience like none other,” Ebert said. “I am honored to ride each summer with this committed community, which inspires us all at Dana-Farber and empowers everything we do to improve patients' lives.”

## The First Ride Had 36 Cyclists and Raised $10,200

Starr organized it in 1980, when he was 25, after his mother, Betty Starr, died of melanoma at 49. She had been treated at Dana-Farber, and the money from that first ride, 36 cyclists and 10 volunteers, went to the institute. Starr remains the PMC's founder and chairman and sits on Dana-Farber's board of trustees.

“The theme for this year's PMC, which is ‘now, more than ever,’ underscores the paramount importance of every single dollar raised in fueling the search for a cure,” Starr said.

## Fourteen Routes Run From 25 to 177 Miles

The routes are fully supported and set at different levels of cycling ability, fundraising capacity and logistics. The two longest, Worcester to Provincetown Inn and Worcester to Provincetown Monument, each run over two days and carry a $6,000 fundraising minimum; both are new in 2026 and replace the routes that used to start in Sturbridge. Wellesley to Provincetown Inn covers 162 miles over two days with the same minimum.

More than 3,500 volunteers work the weekend. Among the riders is the PMC's Living Proof community, people who were previously treated for cancer or are currently undergoing treatment. The organization also runs an indoor spin event called Winter Cycle, a gravel ride called PMC Unpaved, and Kids Rides for ages 2 to 15.
