On 9 September 2026, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison posted on X that OpenRouter, a service that funnels developers' requests across hundreds of AI models, is now crossing 500 trillion tokens a month. Stripe agreed in August to buy OpenRouter for [a reported $7 billion or more](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/16/stripe-will-reportedly-acquire-ai-gateway-startup-openrouter-for-7b/), so the executive touting the milestone is also its buyer.

What matters more than the number is what it signals. As AI models become interchangeable, the company that resells them, rather than the labs that build them, may be the one that keeps the customer.
