Marburg virus has killed around half of the people it has infected across past outbreaks, and 59 years after it was identified there is still no vaccine approved against it anywhere in the world. The World Health Organization lists [no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/marburg-virus-disease) for Marburg virus disease and says early supportive care with rehydration is what improves a patient's chances.

Public Health Vaccines, a privately held biotech in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said on 6 August that the Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Preparedness Consortium has awarded it a contract to move production and testing of its Marburg vaccine candidate, PHV01, to the United States. The money goes to manufacturing rather than to another clinical trial: the capacity to make live viral vaccines on American soil, which the company says is limited.
