Netchex, a payroll company [founded in Covington, Louisiana in 2003](https://netchex.com/about-us/), on Monday launched Mesh, a set of six AI "teammates" that handle payroll, compliance and scheduling work, capping a three-year push into AI in HR that began when a New York private equity firm bought the company in 2023.

Mesh is aimed at businesses whose staff rarely sit at a desk: restaurant groups, hotels, car dealerships and healthcare practices. Each of its six specialists is named, and Netchex says they monitor payroll, time and HR data continuously and act before an administrator asks, with humans signing off the decisions that matter. The product is rolling out to Netchex customers through an early-access program. For Netchex, the launch is the payoff of a sequence of ownership changes and acquisitions going back to 2023.

## The Netchex Payroll Company's Road to Mesh

Netchex was started in 2003 by Will Boudreaux and Stuart Ethridge to sell payroll and human capital management software to [hourly and mobile workforces](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/why-10-000-companies-ripped-out-their-payroll-systems-before-earnin-s-product-even-launched). The company now reports more than 7,500 customers. In June 2023 it was [acquired by GrowthCurve Capital](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230606006091/en/GrowthCurve-Capital-Acquires-Netchex-A-Leading-Provider-of-Cloud-Based-Human-Capital-Management-and-Payroll-Software-Solutions), a New York private equity firm, in a deal the buyer said was meant to accelerate the company's AI strategy. At the time Netchex had roughly 6,400 clients, more than $50 million in annual revenue and 346 employees, and its founders kept stakes in the business.

The AI strategy took concrete shape two years later. In August 2025 Netchex [acquired Mesh.ai](https://www.venerocapitaladvisors.com/transactions/mesh-ai-acquired-by-netchex), a [San Jose startup](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/the-two-year-old-startup-running-dhl-s-customer-service) that went through [Y Combinator's Summer 2020 batch](https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/mesh) and had raised $16 million, including an $11 million Series A led by RTP Global with Sequoia Capital and YC Continuity. Terms of the Netchex deal were not disclosed. Around the same time Netchex installed a new chief executive, Abhinav Agrawal, who had previously co-founded the AI recruiting startups Rocket and Hireflow. Mesh.ai co-founder Saurabh Nangia became chief product officer. The Mesh.ai team then spent about a year turning its technology into the product announced Monday.

"Our mission has always been to build the best software and support for deskless industries. AI teammates are how we keep delivering on that, giving every operator the bench strength that used to be reserved for companies ten times their size," Agrawal said.

## How the AI Agents for HR Work

The pitch for Mesh is that its [AI agents for HR](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/spendflo-flo-ai-procurement-software) do work rather than answer questions. Penny chases missing timecards and flags payroll issues. Atlas connects onboarding, status changes, documents and approvals. Sentinel watches for compliance gaps. Nova turns scattered data into signals for managers, Milo files PTO requests and pulls pay stubs for employees, and Nettie handles product questions for administrators. Netchex says the six are a founding roster and that more will follow. Because the teammates draw on payroll, scheduling, time and HR data in one system, the company says they can spot things a single-purpose tool would miss, such as an expiring technician certification weeks before it leaves a shift uncovered.

The teammates also run inside [ChatGPT and Claude](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/zalos-agentic-ai-finance-seed-round), so employees can file PTO or check pay stubs without opening Netchex, with nothing sensitive submitted until a person approves it. That is no longer a novelty in payroll: Gusto shipped a ChatGPT app and a documented connector for ChatGPT and Claude in January 2026. Nangia framed Mesh as a step past the assistant model. "Operators have been told AI will change everything, but so far it mostly just answers questions when you ask. Mesh gets ahead of the work, handles what people hate doing, and lets them focus on what matters," he said. The timing tracks a broader shift the analyst firm Gartner flagged in August 2025, when it predicted that 40 percent of enterprise applications would feature task-specific AI agents by 2026, up from less than 5 percent in 2025.

## Restaurant Payroll Software and the Deskless Bet

Netchex is betting on a part of the market that most HR software ignores. Emergence Capital's 2020 study of the [deskless workforce](https://www.emcap.com/technology-for-the-deskless-workforce-2020) put the number of workers who do not sit at a desk at 2.7 billion, or about 80 percent of the global total, and found that less than 1 percent of venture investment went into software for them. Restaurant payroll software and the tools around hotel and healthcare rosters have to cope with shift swaps arranged over group texts, late timecards and lean administrative teams, often a single person running payroll and onboarding at once.

Netchex says customers in its early-access program have won back roughly half of their Monday administrative time and seen a double-digit drop in payroll corrections, though it describes those as directional results rather than audited benchmarks. Tabitha Lehman of Northwest X Southern, a multi-property hotel group and Netchex customer, said an AI agent "continuously checking for errors, handling the prep work, and taking care of routine steps could be a total game changer."

The wider HR software market is crowded with similar language. Workday expanded its Illuminate agents in September 2025, UKG unveiled agentic payroll tools in May 2026, Paychex reframed its products around "AI-powered teammates" in December 2025, Rippling launched Rippling AI in March 2026, and Deel now ships seven HR agents. Most of that activity is aimed at large corporate employers. The hourly, deskless end of the market is thinner, with Legion's generative AI assistants the nearest direct precedent, and it is where a company Netchex's size has more room to compete.

## FAQ

**Q: Is Netchex a payroll provider?**
Yes. Netchex has sold payroll and human capital management software since 2003 and reports more than 7,500 customers, mostly businesses with hourly and deskless staff. Mesh is its new AI layer on top of that payroll and HR platform.

**Q: How is AI being used in HR at Netchex?**
Mesh runs six named AI agents that monitor payroll, scheduling, time and HR data and act on routine tasks such as chasing timecards, filing PTO and flagging compliance gaps, with a person approving anything sensitive.

**Q: Can ChatGPT do payroll with Mesh?**
Mesh works inside ChatGPT and Claude, so employees and managers can file PTO, check pay stubs and approve requests without opening Netchex. Payroll rivals including Gusto already offer similar ChatGPT and Claude connections.

**Q: Is HR being replaced by AI?**
Netchex frames Mesh as support for lean HR teams rather than a replacement, and says humans still sign off the decisions that matter. Its early-access customers report winning back administrative time, a figure the company calls directional rather than audited.
