A wall of ice, rock and mud tore through the Rasuwagadhi border crossing between Nepal and Tibet on 26 August, wrecking one of the two main trade routes between China and Nepal and killing hundreds of people. More than 390 deaths have been confirmed, according to Al Jazeera, and the toll is still rising. More than 1,500 people remain missing on both sides of the border, and search teams are still working through debris that buried buildings, vehicles and the customs post at the crossing.

On the Chinese side, Gyirong Port was destroyed. The crossing carried close to a third of all bilateral trade between China and Nepal in 2024, and it serves as a key entry point for Indian pilgrims travelling to sacred sites in Tibet.

The disaster began high on the mountains. A section of ice near Langtang Lirung, a peak of about 7,200 metres, broke away and sent debris racing down the Lhende river into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers below.

## China and Independent Scientists Describe Different Triggers

China's Ministry of Natural Resources said a high-altitude glacier collapse in Nepal triggered the mudslide. Independent scientists and satellite imagery point to a more complicated sequence, in which the first thing to give way was the rock beneath the glacier rather than the ice itself.

Jakob Steiner, a glaciologist at the University of Graz, said the lower part of a glacier tongue sheared off because the bedrock supporting it gave way. Dan Shugar of the University of Calgary and Kristen Cook of Grenoble Alpes University are also on record describing the same sequence, with the ice collapse a consequence of the rock breaking first.

The United States Geological Survey says the exact sequence is still unclear, and that it cannot yet be established whether the initial slope failure was a landslide that swept up part of a glacier or a collapse of the glacier itself.

## The Fourth Himalayan Glacier Disaster in Five Years

The Rasuwagadhi debris flow is the fourth major glacier-triggered disaster in the Himalayas in five years. In February 2021, a rock and ice avalanche at Chamoli in northern India killed more than 200 people. In October 2023, a glacial-lake outburst flood at South Lhonak in Sikkim killed 55. In July 2025, a supraglacial-lake burst at the same Rasuwagadhi crossing killed nine.

ICIMOD's [HI-WISE assessment](https://www.icimod.org/press-release/landmark-report-on-impacts-of-disappearing-snow-and-ice-in-the-hindu-kush-himalaya-current-emissions-path-threatens-two-billion-people-and-is-accelerating-species-extinction/) counts about 200 dangerous glacial lakes across the Hindu Kush Himalaya, and found that glaciers there disappeared 65% faster in the decade to 2020 than in the ten years before. On the current emissions path, the region's glaciers could lose up to 80% of their volume by 2100. The snow and ice that feed the mountains' rivers sustain water for around 2 billion people downstream.

The 2023 Sikkim outburst was later confirmed by a study to have been driven in part by climate change. Even so, Cook cautions that it is difficult to tie any single event conclusively to warming, though higher temperatures raise the odds of these failures.

## A Warning System Built for the Wrong Disaster

China and Nepal built a joint [early-warning system](https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3365488/china-and-nepal-built-early-warning-system-melting-glaciers-himalayas-does-it-work) for exactly this stretch of mountains, and it has worked before, issuing seven successful warnings and preventing casualties. It did not warn of the August avalanche. The system was designed to detect glacial-lake outburst floods, the sudden draining of a lake dammed by ice or moraine, and not the ice-rock avalanche that struck Rasuwagadhi. An ice-rock avalanche releases far more energy than a lake outburst and is more destructive, and it moved in a way the sensors were not built to catch.
