Mortgage rates climbed about a quarter of a percentage point through July, and lenders locked 11% fewer mortgages than they had in June. Rates did not spike. They rose week after week, and that was enough to change what buyers did.

[Freddie Mac's weekly survey](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) tracks the climb: the 30-year fixed averaged 6.43% in the first week of July, then 6.49%, 6.55%, 6.58% and 6.66%, reaching 6.69% in the first week of August. Optimal Blue, which calculates its indices from rates actually locked across about 35% of US mortgage transactions, put July's move at 26 basis points, roughly a quarter of a point, ending the month at 6.72% on its 30-year conforming index.
