Maximor, the New York company whose AI agents run finance operations for mid-market and enterprise businesses, says its revenue has grown 35-fold in the nine months since its $9 million seed round, reaching multi-million-dollar annual recurring revenue. The company announced today that its platform now runs finance work autonomously across revenue, cash, the financial close, accounts payable and receivable, and financial reporting, and says 98% of transactions on the platform complete from start to finish without human intervention.

When Sovereign [first covered Maximor](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/finance-chiefs-spent-millions-on-erps-they-hate-maximor-s-ai-is-now-fixing-that-without-start-2) in February, the company was pitching audit-ready automation that worked without replacing a customer's ERP. Today's announcement widens that claim considerably: from automating parts of the close to operating the full office of the CFO.

## Autonomous Finance and the Limits of Task Automation

Finance teams have spent decades [buying software for individual steps](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/zalos-agentic-ai-finance-seed-round). The ERP records transactions, billing platforms generate invoices, close tools track reconciliations. Each product speeds up one task, then hands the workflow back to a person, because finance work is full of exceptions, judgment calls and company-specific precedent that lives in workpapers, emails and people's heads rather than in the software.

Maximor's argument is that this is [the ceiling of finance automation](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/4-startups-showing-how-ai-in-finance-automation-pays-off-in-weeks), and the reason finance has become a constraint on growth. Usage-based pricing complicates revenue recognition, acquisitions add entities, new sales channels create billing exceptions, and finance is expected to absorb all of it while still closing the books on time.

> "Finance teams are not short of software. They are short of systems willing to take responsibility for the work."
> — Ramnandan Krishnamurthy, CEO and co-founder, Maximor

"The ERP records what happened," said Ramnandan Krishnamurthy, Maximor's CEO and co-founder. "Maximor learns why it happened, executes what comes next and knows when to stop and ask. That is the difference between automating a task and running finance autonomously."

## AI Agents for Finance That Work Inside the Existing ERP

Maximor's Audit-Ready Agents operate where finance teams already work: posting entries in the ERP, reconciling bank accounts, capturing bills, chasing approvals, sending invoices and escalating judgment calls in Slack. Every action is logged and traceable. The ERP remains the system of record while Maximor acts across it, which means customers avoid the year-long migration that switching finance systems usually involves.

The company says roughly 98% of transactions run end to end on their own. The remaining 2% are escalated when an agent meets a decision it has not seen before; once the team resolves it, the system handles it the next time.

Maximor now works with more than 25 customers across software, manufacturing, construction, hospitality and consumer goods, and says its agents operate across hundreds of legal entities, thousands of bank accounts and millions of transactions daily. Customers report cutting repetitive finance work by about 90% and audit exceptions by about 75%, according to the company. At one global cybersecurity company, where growth by acquisition had left 20 accountants reconciling cash across 10 entities, seven currencies and more than 20 banks, Maximor went live in under four weeks and reduced the cash team from 20 people to five. At a private-equity roll-up with more than 30 subsidiaries, the company says audit findings fell from seven to zero within six months.

Customers pay for work that goes live rather than for seats or licenses. "We looked at plenty of tools that automate individual finance tasks - you still end up with your team stitching the work together and owning every outcome," said Sloan Session, CFO at Dura Software, a multi-entity software holding company. "With Maximor, it takes responsibility for the whole workflow, not just the task. It runs the operation but, critically, it knows when to pull us in."

## The US Accountant Shortage Behind CFO Demand

Maximor's growth coincides with a worsening shortage of accountants. The US accounting and auditing workforce has shrunk by more than 17% since 2020, with roughly 300,000 professionals leaving the field, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The AICPA's 2025 Trends report put accounting degrees at a 20-year low, and around three quarters of practicing CPAs are at or near retirement age. Companies that cannot hire accountants are increasingly asking whether software can do the preparation work while a smaller team reviews it.

Venture funding has followed the same logic. Basis, which sells AI agents to accounting firms, raised $100 million at a $1.15 billion valuation in February. Campfire, an AI-native ERP that replaces the general ledger outright, raised $65 million last October. Maximor takes the opposite approach to [the ERP replacements](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/from-frustration-to-fix-rillet-founders-drop-100m-on-legacy-accounting-pain): it layers agents on top of the systems a company already runs.

## From Microsoft's Finance Stack to a $9 Million Seed

Maximor was founded in New York in 2024 by Krishnamurthy and Ajay Krishna Amudan, who spent years at Microsoft leading finance and enterprise transformation work, including the rebuild of Microsoft's internal finance platform covering billing, collections and revenue reporting. Their September 2025 seed round was led by Foundation Capital, with participation from Gaia Ventures, Boldcap and angels including Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas and Zuora founder Tien Tzuo.

"Maximor is moving the category from automation to autonomy," said Ashu Garg, general partner at Foundation Capital. "The company's growth shows that CFOs are ready to hand over complete workflows when autonomy comes with the control and auditability finance demands."

The company's longer-term plan is to use the operational data its agents generate to give businesses a verified, real-time picture of how decisions flow through to financial results, supporting forecasting and capital decisions.

## FAQ

**Q: Is AI going to replace accountants?**
Not in the sense of removing them entirely. Maximor's model keeps accountants as reviewers: agents prepare the work with audit evidence attached, and a smaller finance team approves it. With the US accounting workforce down more than 17% since 2020, much of what agents absorb is work companies were struggling to hire for anyway.

**Q: What can AI agents do in finance?**
On Maximor's platform, agents post entries in the ERP, reconcile bank accounts, capture bills, chase approvals, send invoices, run the financial close and produce multi-entity reports. Around 98% of transactions complete without human input; the rest are escalated to the finance team.

**Q: What is autonomous finance and how does it work?**
Autonomous finance means software that takes responsibility for a whole workflow rather than one step of it. Maximor's agents work inside a company's existing ERP and banking stack, log every action for audit, and escalate decisions they have not seen before. Once a person resolves an escalation, the system handles that case itself in future.

**Q: Will CFOs be replaced by AI?**
No. The platform is pitched as a system of action under the CFO's control: it executes the work, while judgment calls, approvals and anything novel are pulled back to the finance team. The CFO's role shifts toward review and strategy rather than transaction processing.
