Mars has begun putting natural menthol from its Shubh Mint programme in India into the chewing gum it makes in the UK and Poland, the end point of a nine-year investment in a crop the company could have stopped buying altogether.

The alternative was always available. Synthetic menthol is cheap, made to order and, as Mars notes, widely used across the industry. The natural version has to be grown somewhere, and almost all of it is grown in one place.
