A new image of the Helix Nebula, the glowing shell of gas around a dying star about 650 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius, has revealed 22 bow-shaped structures in the material the star is shedding as it collapses toward its final form. The structures, described in [a paper published in Nature in August 2026](https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.11443) by Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University and Roberto Abraham of the University of Toronto, mark where the star's outer layers are being torn apart and mixed into the space between stars.

The team found the bow shocks using hydrogen-alpha light, the specific glow given off by hydrogen gas, gathered with an instrument called MOTHRA, short for Modular Optical Telephoto Hyperspectral Robotic Array. MOTHRA is still being built at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile. Work on it began in spring 2025, and it is not expected to be fully operational until the end of 2026. The Helix image was made with the partially completed array.
