Green cryptocurrencies pass volatility into green bonds, clean energy equities and ESG funds during extreme market conditions, according to peer-reviewed research published in the journal Financial Innovation. The paper reports that the diversification these assets offer each other holds up in ordinary conditions and thins out at both ends of the range, in downturns and in booms alike.

The study was written by Walid Mensi, Rim El Khoury, Abdullah AlGhazali and Sang Hoon Kang, who supervised it as corresponding author at Pusan National University. It examined seven green cryptocurrencies against the S&P Green Bond Index, the S&P Global Clean Energy Index and the S&P ESG Leaders Index. It used quantile vector autoregression, a method that measures how assets move together separately for bearish, normal and bullish conditions rather than averaging across all of them, over the period from November 2017 to July 2024. Green cryptocurrencies are those running on energy efficient consensus mechanisms such as Proof-of-Stake, which settle transactions by staking holdings rather than by the electricity intensive computation used in older designs. They have been taken up as an alternative to cryptocurrencies known for heavy energy use, and Kang says the team wanted to establish how their hedging behaviour compares with conventional green finance.
