Sundar Pichai said on X that a billion people now use Gemini every month, and Google's blog called the app the fastest-growing product in the company's history. It is the 14th Google product to cross a billion users, and by Google's own account it got there faster than any of the other thirteen. Google reported 750 million monthly Gemini users in February 2026, 950 million on its late July earnings call, and a billion last week, according to Google spokesperson Alex Joseph. The announcement promises some data about how people are using Gemini but stops short of a daily-active number or any count of how many of that billion opened the app by their own decision rather than found it waiting for them.

"Monthly users" is a reach metric, and over the past year Google has secured two of the cheapest paths to reach in consumer software: a default slot on the world's most common mobile operating system, and a place inside subscriptions people already pay for.

## Nine in Ten Gemini Users Are on Android

Gemini chief Josh Woodward posted that the app has more than 100 million active users on iOS. Against a total of roughly a billion, that puts close to nine in ten Gemini users on Android, where Google ships the app preinstalled as the default assistant. The Verge, which reported the figures, noted that Google's count appears to refer to the Gemini app itself, not the versions folded into Gmail or Docs, but the preinstalled Android app does seem to count toward the billion. ## Google Bundles Gemini Into Plans People Already Pay For

Gemini is also included by default across Google Workspace business plans, which means every paid Workspace seat carries it whether the person at that desk ever opens it, and most Workspace administrators have not been too thrilled with the per-seat price increases tied to the change. ## OpenAI Crossed the Same Line First, With Less Fanfare

ChatGPT reached a billion monthly users before Gemini did. OpenAI announced it on August 6, buried in a blog post, and said ChatGPT had actually crossed the mark some time ago and had added a billion cumulative users in a single week back in July. OpenAI declined to give its current monthly total. Anthropic does not publish Claude's user numbers at all, and outside estimates put Claude in the tens of millions. The Verge's read on the two leaders is that ChatGPT is likely the larger platform while Gemini may be the faster growing, helped by a distribution channel, the Android operating system, that no chatbot-only rival can match.

None of the three companies says how many of its monthly users open the assistant once and how many rely on it every day. Google has promised more usage data, but its milestone rests on a monthly count that treats a person who opened Gemini once the same as a person who works in it daily. The growth is real, and Gemini is genuinely the fastest Google product ever to reach a billion users. It is also true that much of that billion arrived through a phone's default settings or a bill users were already paying.
