Gartner's first [Magic Quadrant for Enterprise AI Coding Agents, published on May 20, names Anthropic, Cursor, GitHub and OpenAI as Leaders](https://virtualizationreview.com/articles/2026/06/05/ai-firms-push-cloud-giants-from-leaders-quadrant-in-gartner-ai-coding-report.aspx). AWS, Google, Alibaba Cloud and Cognition are Challengers. Tabnine is the only Visionary, and Atlassian, BytePlus and JetBrains are Niche Players.

The same firms sit differently in Gartner's other 2026 AI rankings. In its [Magic Quadrant for Cloud AI Infrastructure, which covers 17 companies, the Leaders are Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft and Oracle](https://www.crn.com/news/ai/2026/aws-google-oracle-microsoft-top-gartner-s-cloud-ai-infrastructure-list-for-2026). Only Microsoft, through its ownership of GitHub, is a Leader in both.

## A New Category Moved the Coding Leaders

Gartner's earlier reports in this area were titled Magic Quadrant for AI Code Assistants. The 2026 edition introduces Enterprise AI Coding Agents, defined as "autonomous or semiautonomous software engineering solutions that perceive context, translate human intent into multistep plans, and execute and verify those steps across code, tests and related engineering artifacts." Code assistants, by Gartner's reading, mainly suggest code, complete snippets and answer questions in chat interfaces, while coding agents let teams "delegate and offload a greater portion of development work through dynamic task planning and tool use."

Under the old category the lineup was different. AWS, GitHub, GitLab and Google Cloud were identified as Leaders in public materials around the 2024 AI code assistant report, and AWS, Cognition through Windsurf, GitHub and GitLab were among the vendors publicly claiming Leader status in 2025. GitHub is the one name that carries a Leader position into the new category. Gartner puts the change down to model providers moving up the stack: the frontier labs that once supplied the underlying AI to coding assistants and agent platforms now ship full coding agents that compete with the application-layer products they used to feed.

## The Cloud Providers Lead Gartner's Separate Infrastructure Ranking

Gartner defines cloud AI infrastructure as cloud services delivering infrastructure built for AI workloads, including model training, tuning, inference and serving. On that question the ranking looks more familiar: AWS, Google, Microsoft and Oracle are the Leaders, CoreWeave, Nebius and Crusoe the Visionaries, Vultr, OVHcloud and Tencent Cloud the Challengers, and Lambda, Cloudflare and Nscale the Niche Players.

The quadrant scores vendors on ability to execute and completeness of vision. Gartner's read on Google points to a full stack for training, tuning and serving large models, custom TPUs for distributed training and low-latency inference, and an AI Hypercomputer combining TPUs and GPUs with high-performance networking and storage, with the caveat that Google Cloud's AI pricing spans enough service layers and consumption options to make cost forecasting hard on large deployments. AWS ranks second on both axes on its own silicon, networking and storage, with managed AI infrastructure running from serverless model access in Amazon Bedrock to large-scale development in SageMaker HyperPod, and a noted weakness in how clearly it presents that range.

## A Third 2026 Quadrant Covers Code Modernization

AWS has publicly said Gartner recognizes it as a Leader in a third 2026 Magic Quadrant, for AI Augmented Code Modernization Tools, and positions it highest for ability to execute. That is a narrower market again, defined around modernizing code a company already runs.

Across the three, AWS is a Challenger in coding agents, a Leader in cloud AI infrastructure and, by its own account, a Leader in code modernization. Anthropic, Cursor and OpenAI, which sell no cloud infrastructure, lead only the coding one. A Leader label describes a position inside one bounded market that Gartner has defined, so the useful question for a buyer reading a vendor's claim is which quadrant it came from.

## FAQ

**Q: What is a Gartner Magic Quadrant?**
A Gartner research report that places the vendors in a defined market into one of four groups, Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries or Niche Players, scored on ability to execute and completeness of vision.

**Q: What does it mean to be in the Leaders quadrant?**
Leaders score well on both axes. Niche Players score low on both, Visionaries have the vision but weaker execution, and Challengers execute well with a narrower vision.

**Q: What is the difference between an AI code assistant and an AI coding agent?**
By Gartner's definitions, a code assistant mainly suggests code, completes snippets and answers questions in a chat interface. An enterprise AI coding agent perceives context, turns intent into multistep plans, and executes and verifies those steps across code, tests and related engineering artifacts.

**Q: Who are the Leaders in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise AI Coding Agents?**
Anthropic, Cursor, GitHub and OpenAI. AWS, Google, Alibaba Cloud and Cognition are Challengers in the same report, Tabnine is the only Visionary, and Atlassian, BytePlus and JetBrains are Niche Players.
