Garmin acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic from Peaksware Holdings on July 22, 2026, bringing two of the most widely used training platforms for athletes and coaches into its product portfolio. Financial terms were not disclosed. The 120 combined employees from both platforms will join Garmin's global workforce.

TrainingPeaks is the dominant endurance training software among triathletes, cyclists, and distance runners, used by millions of athletes globally. TrainHeroic serves the strength and conditioning market, connecting coaches in team sports with their athletes through structured programming tools. Together, the two platforms represent Garmin's most significant push into coach-mediated training, beyond its existing devices and fitness apps.

The acquisition does not mark a break from an existing relationship. Andy Stephens, CEO of Peaksware Holdings, noted that the two companies had worked together for over a decade to democratise coaching and performance insights. TrainingPeaks already integrates deeply with Garmin hardware, making this a consolidation of an established partnership rather than a new direction.

## What Garmin Owning TrainingPeaks Means for Coaches

For the coaches who rely on TrainingPeaks to plan athlete workloads, assign structured sessions, and review performance metrics, the immediate question is continuity. Garmin has not announced any changes to the platforms' functionality or pricing, and the acquisition language emphasises expansion of access rather than restriction.

Brad Trenkle, Garmin Co-Chief Operating Officer, said the deal "will expand access to more authentic coaching experiences, connecting athletes with professional coaches who guide, motivate and inspire them to reach their goals."

That framing is forward-looking, not architectural. What Garmin has not addressed is how it will handle the coaching platforms' relationships with competing hardware and software. TrainingPeaks currently integrates with devices from Wahoo, Zwift, and others. Those integrations carry commercial value to the athletes and coaches who use them, and any narrowing of interoperability would carry a real cost.

## The Ecosystem Risk: Third-Party Integrations and Competitors

The concern among those following the deal centres on what Garmin does next with the platforms rather than what it has done so far. The worst-case reading is that Garmin uses ownership of TrainingPeaks to steer athletes toward Garmin hardware and away from alternatives, either by degrading third-party integrations or by making Garmin-specific features the default path.

Competitors in the endurance training software space include TrainerRoad, Today's Plan, Intervals.icu, and Strava, which offers partial training load tracking. None of them carries TrainingPeaks' coach network or market share, which is part of what makes the acquisition strategically significant and part of what makes its future direction consequential to athletes not using Garmin devices.

## TrainingPeaks vs Competitors After the Deal

Whether the acquisition strengthens or weakens TrainingPeaks relative to its competitors depends on how Garmin governs the platform. If it remains open to rival hardware and third-party software, the additional investment and distribution that Garmin can bring could make TrainingPeaks more capable. If the platform is gradually repositioned as a Garmin ecosystem feature, coaches whose athletes use mixed hardware setups will have reason to look elsewhere.

The history of platform acquisitions in adjacent markets offers mixed precedent. Some acquired developer tools maintain their cross-platform utility; others are absorbed into the parent's walled garden over time. Garmin has not signalled which direction it intends to take, and the integration roadmap has not been made public.

For now, both platforms continue to operate. The deal has closed, the staff are transferring, and athletes and coaches using TrainingPeaks will see no immediate change.
