A silicon architecture built around neural network sparsity is proving commercially durable. femtoAI, the California-based edge AI inference company, reported 5x growth in the first half of 2026, driven by volume deployments across consumer electronics and the addition of industrial use cases that were not in its original market scope.

The company's Sparse Processing Unit (SPU) has accumulated more than 200,000 units shipped in its first-generation form. That figure now underpins partnerships with Marshall for AI-enhanced audio processing in premium headphones and earbuds, a continuing five-year arrangement with ABOV Semiconductor and Samsung covering home appliances, and a position as the on-device AI solution for six tier-1 next-generation smart glass vendors, including Orka. The breadth of verticals is not accidental: the SPU is designed to run CNNs, RNNs, Transformers, and custom models, which gives it purchase in categories that otherwise require separate, purpose-built silicon.

The growth figure lands against a backdrop the company describes as global AI inference demand outpacing supply, a condition that has directed commercial attention toward the efficiency characteristics of inference hardware rather than raw throughput. For chips like the SPU, that attention is the market.
