Something real is happening in European payments this year, and it is worth reporting accurately rather than dramatically. Wero, the account to account payment system built by a consortium of sixteen major European banks, went live for e-commerce in Belgium and Germany in 2026, with France entering pilot and an autumn launch planned, and the Netherlands and Luxembourg rolling out behind them. Wero moves money directly from a customer's bank account to a merchant's, settling in under ten seconds, with no card network sitting in the middle at all. More than 53 million people already hold a Wero-enabled account. That is a genuine, measurable rollout, not a plan on paper.

The motivation behind it is just as real. European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde has warned publicly that the major digital payment systems Europe depends on are controlled by American or Chinese companies. Mario Draghi, in his own account of the risk, has argued that deep financial integration built dependencies that can be turned into leverage the moment allies stop acting like allies. Martina Weimert, who runs the European Payments Initiative behind Wero, has called Europe's reliance on foreign payment rails urgent rather than merely inconvenient. A member of the European Parliament went further still, calling for Europe to build what she termed an Airbus of payment systems, a deliberate echo of the aircraft industry Europe once had to build from nothing to stop depending on America for that too.
