Google DeepMind on 8 September 2026 released AlphaGenome Atlas, a free tool that predicts the molecular effect of all 9 billion possible single-letter changes to human DNA. The London company is making the [tool available to academic researchers](https://deepmind.google/blog/alphagenome-atlas-a-predictive-map-of-every-possible-dna-letter-change-in-the-human-genome/) through a web portal and an application programming interface, with commercial access on Google Cloud described as coming soon. For the first time, a researcher can look up any single-nucleotide variant in the genome without writing code or running a model of their own.

The Atlas is a precomputed database, roughly one petabyte in size, holding predictions generated by DeepMind's existing AlphaGenome model. That model appeared as a preprint in June 2025 and was published in Nature in January 2026. It predicts molecular and regulatory effects, estimating how a given variant changes gene expression, transcription-factor binding and chromatin accessibility, and condenses those effects into a single simplified impact score. It does not produce a verdict on whether a variant is pathogenic or causes a particular disease.
