A sustainable fashion label can spend years proving where its materials come from, which factories cut them and how the offcuts are disposed of. None of that scrutiny follows the label's name once someone else copies the garment and sells it as the real thing.

The frameworks that screen brands for the right to show at a fashion week, or to carry a sustainability claim, look at what a brand submits about its own production. A counterfeit carries the same name and the same design and was never submitted to anything.

Axencis, a London brand protection and IP enforcement firm that handles takedowns and legal enforcement for fashion, automotive and consumer electronics brands, says a fake of a sustainable design is the least regulated product in the category, sold under the brand's own name.
