Castelion, a defense company founded in 2022 by former SpaceX executives, has raised $1 billion in a Series C round that values it at $13 billion, money it will spend to make hypersonic strike missiles at a price and a production rate the American arsenal has never achieved. The round is one of the largest ever for a firm that manufactures physical weapons rather than the software and drones that have defined the recent defense-tech boom, and it marks where a fast-growing pool of private capital now believes the military's most urgent shortfall lies.

The equity portion, $800 million, was co-led by JPMorganChase's Strategic Investment Group, Andreessen Horowitz and Carlyle, joined by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Altimeter, General Catalyst and, for the first time, the mutual-fund manager T. Rowe Price. A $250 million committed revolving credit facility brings the headline figure to $1 billion. The company plans to pour it into Blackbeard, a missile designed to fly above Mach 5 and maneuver against defenses, and into the factories meant to turn it out by the hundreds.

## Twenty-Five Years of Programs Left the Shelf Nearly Bare

The reason blue-chip investors are writing nine-figure checks for missiles starts with a hole in the US inventory. China fielded its DF-17 hypersonic glide vehicle around 2019, and Russia deployed its Avangard and Zircon systems in the same window. American efforts stalled. The Air Force's Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon was [cancelled in November 2023](https://thediplomat.com/2024/01/hurdles-in-the-hypersonic-race-the-united-states-failed-arrw-program/) after repeated test failures and roughly $15 billion in spending, and the Navy's HALO program was terminated. The Army's Dark Eagle, the one system to reach initial capability in late 2025, costs an estimated $35 million to $41 million per round and rolls off the line at only about a dozen to two dozen units a year.

That combination, a capability the adversary has and the United States mostly does not, plus a per-unit price that makes any real stockpile unaffordable, is the market Castelion is aiming at. The company targets a unit cost near $384,000, with early production reportedly closer to $442,000, against the tens of millions that legacy hypersonic rounds command.

## Sixteen Days of Fighting Drained the Stockpile

The second force is how quickly modern conflict consumes precision weapons. The Pentagon's answer has been to treat volume itself as the weapon. It has contracted a set of newer firms, among them Anduril, Leidos, CoAspire and Castelion, for more than 10,000 low-cost missiles over three years, betting that many cheaper rounds beat a handful of exquisite ones.

## SpaceX's Factory Playbook, Aimed at Missiles

Castelion's founders, chief executive Bryon Hargis, operating chief Sean Pitt and finance chief Andrew Kreitz, are applying the manufacturing approach they learned making rockets. The company designs and makes in-house, buys components from automotive and industrial suppliers instead of legacy aerospace vendors, and sources parts such as high-pressure tubes originally made for oil and gas fracking. It says it flies more than 20 experimental tests a year, against the two or three a legacy program might manage, and that it took Blackbeard from a clean sheet to a program of record in under four years, with a first flight test in the Mojave Desert in March 2024.

The physical bet sits in Sandoval County, New Mexico, where Castelion is developing Project Ranger, a 1,000-acre site it describes as the largest dedicated hypersonic-missile manufacturing facility in the country. The company says it has already committed more than $250 million of its own capital there and will add hundreds of millions more, with additional production in Texas and California and headquarters in Torrance.

Castelion is riding the same wave as Anduril, valued near $61 billion in May 2026 and reportedly in talks at close to $100 billion. Defense-tech startups raised roughly $14.6 billion in the first five months of 2026, and even Lockheed Martin has responded, unveiling a cheaper, manufacturing-first Next-Generation Glide Body in June.

## Fifty Prototypes Against a Target of Thousands

What the money does not yet buy is a proven weapon. Hypersonics are genuinely hard, as ARRW's failure record shows, and low-cost hypersonics have no track record at scale; Dark Eagle was also pitched as the affordable option. A Series C funds factories, not fielded rounds, and Blackbeard has yet to enter service. Castelion has secured more than $500 million in military contracts over the past year and a half, but its documented order for Blackbeard is a $23.4 million Navy award for 50 pre-production prototypes due in 2027, against the roughly 500 a year the company wants to make and the 3,000-plus a year the Pentagon says it needs.

Analysts urge caution on the economics. A researcher at the Center for a New American Security has described hypersonic cost reduction as compelling but challenging to achieve in practice. The sector also shows familiar signs of froth. Anduril trades at roughly 14 times expected 2026 revenue, against two to three times for incumbents such as Northrop Grumman and L3Harris, and its own chief executive, Brian Schimpf, has cautioned that cheap capital can create "unrealistic expectations."

The money is committed and the New Mexico site is going up. Castelion has not yet delivered the cheap hypersonic missile at scale that investors are betting on.
