The Alliance for OpenUSD has begun the ISO certification process for its Core Specification 1.1 and simultaneously opened a public GitHub repository for the spec, moves that signal the organisation is shifting from industry consortium to formal standards body. The announcements came at SIGGRAPH 2026 alongside the addition of four new General Members: ByteDance, Huawei, Physicl, and Unity.

OpenUSD originated at Pixar as Universal Scene Description, a system for composing complex 3D scenes from multiple contributors without conflicts, and has since migrated outward into manufacturing, automotive, geospatial, and now AI pipelines at a moment when the question for companies building on it is no longer whether the format will be adopted broadly, but who sets the rules as it hardens into shared infrastructure.

AOUSD's founding members, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, NVIDIA, and Pixar, retain structural influence over the specification's direction. The new members join at General Member level, which gives them a voice in working groups rather than a seat at the steering committee. For ByteDance, whose PICO hardware division has adopted USD as a core format in its Spatial SDK, and for Huawei, whose enterprise transformation work spans sectors that will require interoperable 3D data, the calculation is presumably that shaping the spec from inside is preferable to implementing whatever the founders decide. Unity's participation reflects a similar logic: the real-time engine sits at the junction of creative tools, simulation, and AI agents, and has a commercial interest in ensuring the underlying format does not calcify around assumptions that disadvantage its pipeline.
