Anthropic will keep Claude Fable 5 in its Max and Team Premium subscriptions from July 20, and cut Pro and Team Standard customers off from bundled access on the same day.

The company announced the decision on July 18 at around 10:45am through its official account on X. There was no post on anthropic.com. Fable 5 "will be included in all Max and Team Premium plans, at 50 per cent of limits," the [account wrote](https://x.com/claudeai/status/2078302415804379218), adding that demand for Fable had been challenging to manage. Simon Willison and TechTimes described the move as making Fable "permanent" on Max. Anthropic's own wording carries no such term and sets no end date.

## What Claude Max and Team Premium Plans Get From July 20

Max subscribers, who pay $100 or $200 a month, keep Fable 5 inside their plan at half their weekly usage limits. Team Premium gets the same terms. This is the first time Anthropic has committed to carrying Fable on a subscription tier without naming a cutoff. [The Decoder reports](https://the-decoder.com/anthropic-slashes-claude-fable-5-limits) that Anthropic's standard weekly usage limits fall by about a third on the same day, so 50 percent of limits is 50 percent of a smaller pool. Enterprise plans were not mentioned in the announcement, and their access to Fable is unaddressed.

## Claude Pro vs Max: Who Pays Per Token Now

Pro subscribers, on $17 to $20 a month, lose bundled Fable access on July 20, as do Team Standard customers. Both groups receive a one-time $100 usage credit and then pay standard API rates. Those rates are $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, double the $5 and $25 Anthropic charges for Opus 4.8. A Claude subscription at the Pro price no longer carries Fable, and the free access that ran on paid plans since July 1 ends for these users on the same date.

## How Fable 5 Benchmarks Against GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi K3

The reversal follows pressure from OpenAI, which released GPT-5.6 on July 9. Its flagship Sol tier is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $30 output, roughly half Fable's input price. On [Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index](https://artificialanalysis.ai/articles/gpt-5-6-has-landed), Sol scores 58.9 to Fable 5's 59.9. Willison [read the decision](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Jul/18/claude-make-fable-5-permanent/) as an answer to that competition.

Pressure is also coming from China. On July 16 Moonshot AI released [Kimi K3](https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/kimi-k3), a 2.8 trillion parameter model billed as the largest ever headed for an open-weight release, priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output, about a third of Fable's rates. K3 scores 57.1 on Artificial Analysis's index, behind Fable 5 and Sol, and Moonshot itself says the model trails both, though [Arena.ai ranked it above Fable 5](https://decrypt.co/373716/china-kimi-k3-largest-open-source-ai-model-ever-beats-claude-fable-gpt-5-6-sol) on a web interface benchmark. Moonshot has promised the weights on Hugging Face by July 27.

Chip and AI stocks fell on July 17, with TSMC down 7 percent, and [Fortune described the release](https://fortune.com/2026/07/17/china-moonshot-kimi-k3-markets-china-ai/) as a second DeepSeek shock, reporting that Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei had not expected a Chinese lab to close the gap for another six months. [The Decoder tied](https://the-decoder.com/anthropic-slashes-claude-fable-5-limits-in-max-and-team-premium-and-pushes-pro-users-toward-api-pricing/) Anthropic's subscription decision to pricing pressure from China as well as OpenAI, a link Anthropic has not made itself. The contest Fable is priced against is widening from Anthropic versus OpenAI to American closed models against Chinese open-weight ones, and [TechCrunch spent the week](https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/18/kimi-threat-or-menace/) rounding up reaction from Washington officials and investors to the K3 release.

The announcement is the third change to Fable's terms since its July 1 return. Fable 5 launched June 9, was suspended around June 12 under a US export-control directive, and returned to general availability July 1 with free access on paid plans through July 7. Anthropic moved that deadline to July 12 hours before it expired, then to July 19, then made the July 18 announcement. Sovereign covered [the relaunch and the moving deadlines](https://www.sovereignmagazine.com/article/anthropic-fable-5-fumbled-launch) on July 14, when the company faced a choice between carrying Fable's cost inside subscriptions or losing subscribers to a cheaper model. The July 18 decision carries that cost for Max and Team Premium only, and moves everyone else onto metered pricing.

On Hacker News, some developers questioned whether it is worth building workflows around a model whose availability has changed this often.

## FAQ

**Q: Does Claude Pro include Fable 5?**
Not after July 20. Pro and Team Standard subscribers lose bundled access on that date. They receive a one-time $100 usage credit and then pay standard API rates for any further use.

**Q: How much does Claude Fable cost?**
Through the API, $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, double the $5 and $25 Anthropic charges for Opus 4.8. Max and Team Premium subscribers get it inside their plans at 50 percent of usage limits.

**Q: Is Claude Fable 5 free?**
No. The free access that ran on paid plans since July 1 ends July 20. After that Fable is bundled only in Max and Team Premium, and metered at API rates for everyone else.

**Q: What is the difference between Claude Max and Claude Pro?**
Max costs $100 or $200 a month and, from July 20, includes Fable 5 at 50 percent of limits with no stated end date. Pro costs $17 to $20 a month and no longer includes Fable 5, leaving Pro users to pay per token after a one-time $100 credit.
