Anthropic said on September 23 that its AI model Claude autonomously led the discovery of a previously overlooked enzyme system found mainly in bacteriophages, the viruses that infect bacteria. The company confirmed the system exists in the lab, making this a rare case of an AI running a scientific search on its own and surfacing something biologists had missed. Anthropic named the system Array-Associated Reverse Transcriptases, or ART.

Claude carried out the search over about 21 hours, using roughly 950 agents and 210 million tokens, [according to Anthropic's account of the work](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-discovers-novel-enzyme-system). The agents gathered more than 200,000 reverse transcriptases, picked out 3,500 candidate systems, and narrowed those to the 20 most compelling, which they analyzed to produce human-readable reports.
