On the same day it released Claude Opus 4.8, its latest flagship model, and confirmed that Mythos, the far more powerful system it has been withholding since April, will be made available to the public within weeks. The round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer Investment Group, Greenoaks Capital and Sequoia Capital. A further $15bn in previously committed capital, including $5bn from Amazon, brings the total raised in this cycle to $80bn. The valuation nearly triples the $380bn Anthropic carried in February and lifts it past OpenAI, which was last reported heading toward $852bn after a $122bn raise in March. ## How much revenue does Anthropic generate Anthropic told investors it is now generating revenue at an annualised rate of roughly $47bn, most of it from companies and developers paying per token to build on the Claude API. That figure is up from about $30bn earlier in the year and approximately $10bn for the whole of 2025. The run rate also puts it ahead of OpenAI, whose annualised revenue was last reported at around $33bn. For the first time, the smaller of the two leading AI laboratories leads its rival on both valuation and reported sales, a reversal of the position the two companies held for most of the past three years. ## What is Claude Mythos and when will it be released The funding came alongside the clearest signal yet that Anthropic intends to release Mythos, the model it has kept behind closed doors for two months, to general customers. "We're making swift progress on developing these safeguards and expect to be able to bring Mythos-class models to all our customers in the coming weeks," the company said. Mythos sits in a new model tier called Capybara, above the existing Opus, Sonnet and Haiku line. In internal testing and restricted deployment, it has shown capabilities far beyond any commercially available AI system. It discovered thousands of previously unknown, high-severity vulnerabilities in every major operating system and web browser, including a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD and a 16-year-old flaw in FFmpeg that had survived five million automated test runs. Where Opus 4.6 had a near-zero success rate at autonomous exploit development, Mythos can reverse-engineer a stripped binary and produce a working exploit overnight. Since April, roughly 40 organisations have had access under a preview programme focused on cybersecurity. A preview version briefly appeared inside Claude Code, Anthropic's coding tool, before being pulled offline. ## Anthropic Mythos and White House cybersecurity concerns The model's capabilities have drawn attention from Washington. The White House opposed an earlier plan to expand Mythos access to about 70 additional organisations, citing concerns about misuse and the infrastructure required to support a wider rollout. At the same time, the Office of Management and Budget has been preparing a version of Mythos for use by federal agencies, an arrangement that would give the US government access while keeping the model away from most of the private sector. AI-enabled cyberattacks increased 89 percent in 2025, according to industry figures, and the time from vulnerability disclosure to exploitation dropped from 771 days in 2018 to four hours in 2024. By last year, most exploited vulnerabilities were weaponised before public disclosure. Anthropic's argument for the staged release is that defenders need a head start: vetted organisations use the model to find and fix weaknesses in their systems before it reaches anyone who might use it to attack. ## Claude Opus 4.8 features and benchmarks The model available to most customers as of Wednesday is Claude Opus 4.8, a more conventional upgrade released across the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI and Microsoft Foundry at the same price as the version it replaces. Anthropic said it scores 69.2 percent on SWE-bench Pro, a test of agentic coding ability, up from 64.3 percent for Opus 4.7, and that it is roughly four times less likely than its predecessor to let flaws in its own code pass unnoticed. Opus 4.7, released just 41 days earlier, had a mixed reception. Users reported benchmark gains but also complaints that the model refused reasonable requests too often. Anthropic has positioned 4.8 as the correction, with faster output, a new dynamic workflows feature that coordinates hundreds of parallel subagents, and a reduced minimum for prompt caching. Simon Willison, who tracks AI model releases, described the upgrade as "a modest but tangible improvement." The release arrives under competitive pressure. OpenAI's Codex grew from about 600,000 weekly users at the start of 2026 to more than four million by late April, and Google has continued pushing updates to its Gemini line.
