Two academic cryptographers have completed a formal verification of 120 security properties in MaxKyber, the network protocol underlying American Binary's Ambit Client enterprise VPN. The Washington DC company says the attestation, conducted by Dr. Joe Kiniry and Dr. Tom Shrimpton, confirms compliance with all requirements of the Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite 2.0, the NSA's cryptographic roadmap for systems handling national security information.

Formal verification is not a penetration test or an audit. It uses symbolic proof tools to demonstrate mathematically that a protocol cannot be broken in ways the specification forbids. The methods used here, Tamarin and ProVerif, are standard in academic cryptographic research, though rarely applied to a commercial product at this scale. Kiniry and Shrimpton's scope covered eleven categories: secrecy, authentication, forward secrecy, identity hiding, and resistance to replay attacks, denial of service, resource exhaustion, and key compromise impersonation, among others.

The standard the protocol is verified against, CNSA 2.0, requires agencies and contractors running National Security Systems to migrate to post-quantum algorithms by 2030. MaxKyber uses ML-KEM-1024 (FIPS 203), AES-256-GCM, and SHA-512, all algorithms on the CNSA 2.0 approved list. For enterprises selling to or operating within national security contexts, alignment with that standard is increasingly a procurement requirement rather than a differentiator.
